Tarik Skubal was nearly unhittable this afternoon as the Tigers took game 1 of the AL Wild Card, 2-1, against the Cleveland Guardians.

The Detroit Tigers got on the scoreboard right away in the first inning on an RBI single by Spencer Torkleson, scoring Kerry Carpenter.  Carpenter singled and advanced to second base on an error.

Skubal was lights out right away, striking out two Guardian hitters in the first inning.  After giving up a 1-out single to Kyle Manzardo in the second, Skubal was able to get out of the inning as Gabrial Arias grounded into a double play.

The Guardians finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the 4th on a Gabriel Arias infield single that scored Angel Martinez, who also reached first base on an infield single.   Arias was initially called out on a tag at home plate, but after a review, it was deemed that he scored...and it wasn't even close.

The Tigers got the game winning run in the top half of the 7th.   Riley Greene led off the inning with a double to right field and advanced to third on an error off the bat of Wenceel Perez.  Greene then scored on a succesful squeeze bunt by Zach McKinstry.  That run was all Skubal needed.

Guardians pitcher, Gavin Williams, pitched well in the loss.  He went 6 innings and gave up just 5 hits.  Both of the Tiger runs were unearned.  Williams also had 8 strikeouts.  Skubal finished with 14 strikeouts in 7.2 innings.  He only gave up 3 hits in the win.

First pitch of game 2 is scheduled for 1 pm on Wednesday in Cleveland (Casey Mize vs. Tanner Bibee).
